Before You Start: Positioning Your Dash Cam
UK law is clear: your dash cam must not obstruct your view of the road. The Highway Code states nothing should be in the swept area of your windscreen wipers. The sweet spot is behind the rear-view mirror on the passenger side — out of your eyeline but with a clear forward view. If your car has a sensor housing behind the mirror (common on modern cars), mount the dash cam just to the left of it.
Method 1: Plug-in Installation (12V Socket) — 10 Minutes
This is the quickest and easiest method. No tools required, no wiring knowledge needed. The trade-off: cables will be visible in places, and parking mode won’t work.
What You Need
- Your dash cam and its included 12V power adapter
- The included suction cup or adhesive mount
- A plastic trim tool (or an old credit card) for tucking cables
- Microfibre cloth for cleaning the windscreen
Step by Step
- Clean the glass. Wipe the mounting area with the microfibre cloth. Any dust or grease will weaken the adhesive or suction.
- Attach the mount. Press the suction cup or adhesive pad firmly against the glass behind your rear-view mirror. Hold for 30 seconds. For adhesive pads, leave it 24 hours before attaching the camera if possible — this gives the bond time to fully set.
- Clip in the dash cam. Attach the camera to the mount. Adjust the angle so the lens captures roughly 60% road and 40% sky — this gives the best exposure balance.
- Route the power cable. Plug the cable into the dash cam, then tuck it along the headliner (the fabric ceiling edge), down the A-pillar (the plastic trim between windscreen and door), under the glovebox, and to the 12V socket. Never route cables across the A-pillar airbag — tuck the cable behind the airbag, not in front of it. If your car has curtain airbags, route the cable along the door seal instead.
- Plug in and test. Start the engine. The dash cam should power on automatically. Check the live view on the screen (or app) to confirm the angle is right.
Method 2: Hardwired Installation (Fuse Box) — 30-60 Minutes
Hardwiring gives you a completely invisible install and enables parking mode. The dash cam draws power directly from the fuse box and automatically shuts off if the battery gets low. This is the setup most enthusiasts and professionals recommend.
What You Need
- A hardwire kit (specific to your dash cam — £15-25). Most use a 3-wire setup: constant power (yellow), accessory power (red), and ground (black)
- Fuse taps (usually included with the kit)
- A trim removal tool set (£5-10 from Amazon or Halfords)
- A multimeter or circuit tester to identify fuses
- Needle-nose pliers
- Your car’s fuse box diagram (usually in the owner’s manual or on the fuse box cover)
Step by Step
- Mount the dash cam first (same as Method 1, steps 1-3). This determines your cable length requirements.
- Locate your fuse box. Usually under the dashboard on the driver’s side, in the glovebox, or in the boot. Check your owner’s manual.
- Identify the right fuses using your circuit tester:
- Constant power (yellow wire): Needs power even when the car is off. Look for fuses like hazard lights, interior lights, central locking, or the radio memory. Test with the ignition OFF.
- Accessory power (red wire): Only live when the ignition is on. Cigarette lighter/12V socket, heated seats, or windscreen wipers are good candidates. Test with ignition ON then OFF to confirm.
- Install the fuse taps. Remove the chosen fuses with needle-nose pliers. Insert the original fuse into the bottom slot of the fuse tap, and a new fuse (same rating) into the top slot. Push the fuse tap firmly into the fuse box.
- Connect the ground (black wire). Find a bare metal bolt or screw near the fuse box — this is your earth point. Loosen it, wrap the ground wire around it, and tighten firmly. A poor ground is the #1 cause of hardwire problems.
- Route the power cable. Run the hardwire cable from the dash cam, along the headliner, down the A-pillar (behind the airbag!), and into the fuse box area. Use cable ties to keep everything tidy.
- Connect and configure. Plug the cable into the dash cam. Most hardwire kits have a voltage cut-off switch — set it to 12.0V or 12.2V to protect your car battery. Lower settings may not start your car on a cold morning.
- Test everything. Start the car — dash cam powers on. Turn off the car — dash cam should enter parking mode (if supported) or shut down after the configured delay.
Installing a Rear Camera
Adding a rear camera follows the same cable routing principles but requires running a longer cable from the front unit to the rear window. Most rear cameras connect to the front dash cam via a single cable (usually 6 metres, included).
- Route the cable along the headliner. Starting from the front dash cam, tuck the cable under the headliner along the top of the passenger-side windows. In a hatchback or SUV, you’ll need to pass the cable through the rubber grommet/tube that carries the rear wiper and brake light wiring between the body and the tailgate. This is the trickiest part — a wire coat hanger or cable fishing tool helps enormously.
- Mount the rear camera. Centre it at the top of the rear window. Make sure the rear wiper clears that area (if applicable). For adhesive mounts, clean the glass thoroughly first.
- Connect and test. Plug the cable into both cameras and verify you’re getting a clean rear feed.
Professional Installation
If any of this sounds daunting, professional installation is widely available and surprisingly affordable:
- Halfords: £30-40 for a front-only fit, £50-70 for front + rear. Book online.
- Independent auto electricians: £40-80 depending on complexity. Often better quality than the high street.
- Mobile fitters: Come to your home or workplace. Expect £60-100. Search locally or try websites like ChipsAway or ClickMechanic.
Hardwiring typically costs £10-20 more than a standard 12V install. Always ask if they’ll route cables behind airbags — a good installer will.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Routing cables over airbags. In a crash, the cable becomes a cheese wire across the deploying airbag. Always route behind the airbag module.
- Mounting too low. It obstructs your view, attracts thieves, and captures more dashboard reflection than road.
- Ignoring the voltage cut-off. A hardwired dash cam without a voltage cut-off (or set too low) will flatten your battery in days. 12.0V is the minimum safe setting.
- Using the wrong fuse rating. The dash cam draws 1-2 amps. Don’t tap into a 30A fuse. Stick to 5-15A circuits.
- Skipping the ground connection. A loose or poorly chosen ground point causes intermittent power loss — the most common “my dash cam randomly turns off” complaint.
Model-Specific Tips
Some dash cams have installation quirks worth knowing:
- Nextbase: Uses a magnetic Click & Go mount — no clips to wrestle with. The GPS is built into the mount, not the camera.
- Viofo: Adhesive pads are very strong — get the positioning right first time. Use the included static stickers if you might want to reposition.
- Garmin: Extremely small cameras (especially the Mini series) — cable management is easier because the camera itself is tiny. But the mount uses a ball joint that can loosen over time.
- Thinkware: Radar-based parking mode uses almost no power — if you’re hardwiring primarily for parking mode, Thinkware is the most battery-friendly option.
