AZDOME M550 – 4K on a Shoestring Budget
The AZDOME M550 is one of the cheapest 4K dash cams available at £70 to £90, and it shows. AZDOME is a budget brand operating almost exclusively through Amazon and online marketplaces, and the M550 is their volume seller. It promises 4K recording, a large 3-inch screen, Wi-Fi connectivity, and parking mode – an ambitious specification list for the price. The question is whether it delivers or whether the low price comes at too great a cost.
Image Quality
The M550 claims 4K recording at 30fps, but the results suggest either interpolation from a lower-resolution sensor or a very basic 4K sensor. Daytime footage is acceptable at first glance but lacks the fine detail of genuine 4K cameras. Number plates are readable at close range but become illegible more quickly than on cameras from established brands. The 170-degree wide-angle lens introduces significant fisheye distortion, and colours can look oversaturated. Night performance is poor – the sensor struggles badly in low light, producing noisy, smeary footage where number plates are essentially unreadable on moving vehicles. This is the biggest gap between specification claims and real-world performance of any camera on this list.
Features
The large 3-inch LCD screen is the most prominent feature and does make menu navigation and footage review easy – it is actually a nice screen for the price. Wi-Fi connectivity connects to an app that is functional but basic. A parking mode is included but requires hardwiring and is unreliable in practice due to the budget electronics. GPS is not included. The camera supports microSD cards up to 64GB, which fills quickly with 4K files. Loop recording and a G-sensor are standard. Build quality is plasticky and the buttons feel loose.
Installation
The M550 uses a suction cup mount that is functional but feels less secure than mounts from established brands. The camera body is large due to the 3-inch screen, making discreet placement difficult. Power is via mini USB with the included 12V adapter. Cable routing is standard.
Verdict
The AZDOME M550 is a classic case of impressive specifications on paper undermined by real-world performance. At £70 to £90, it is undeniably cheap, but the 4K claim is misleading, night performance is poor, and build quality is questionable. It will capture a daytime incident well enough for insurance purposes, but there are better options from Rove, 70mai, and Viofo at similar prices. Recommended only if the budget is absolutely fixed below £80.
