Dash Cam Installation Guide — Step by Step for UK Drivers

You Can Do This Yourself

Most dash cams are designed for DIY installation. Basic setup takes 10-15 minutes with no special tools. Hardwiring for parking mode takes 30-60 minutes and requires basic confidence with a fuse box — but it’s still very doable.

Here’s exactly how to do it, step by step.

What You’ll Need

  • Your dash cam (obviously)
  • A microSD card (not always included — check the box)
  • The included 12V power cable and mount
  • A plastic trim tool or old credit card (for tucking cables)
  • Isopropyl alcohol wipes (for cleaning the windscreen before mounting)
  • If hardwiring: A hardwire kit (sold separately, ~£15), fuse taps, and a multimeter or fuse tester

Step 1: Choose the Right Position

Mount your dash cam behind the rear-view mirror, on the passenger side of the windscreen. This keeps it out of your line of sight (which is a legal requirement in the UK) while giving it a clear view of the road.

Key rules:

  • It must not block more than 4cm of the swept area of the windscreen (the area covered by your wipers)
  • Position it so the lens is in the centre of the windscreen horizontally — this gives the most balanced field of view
  • Avoid placing it over any sensors, cameras, or heating elements built into the windscreen

Step 2: Clean and Mount

Clean the mounting area thoroughly with the alcohol wipe. Any dust or residue will weaken the adhesive. Let it dry completely (30 seconds).

Peel the backing off the adhesive mount, press firmly against the glass, and hold for 30 seconds. Most mounts use 3M VHB tape — it bonds stronger over 24 hours, so avoid adjusting it once it’s stuck.

Step 3: Route the Power Cable

This is the part that separates a clean install from a messy one. The goal: hide as much cable as possible.

  1. From the camera, run the cable up into the headliner (the fabric roof lining). There’s usually a gap you can tuck it into.
  2. Run it along the top of the windscreen, tucked into the headliner, towards the passenger A-pillar.
  3. At the A-pillar, carefully tuck the cable behind the plastic trim. Caution: if your car has curtain airbags in the A-pillar, route the cable behind the airbag, not in front of it. Use a trim tool to gently pry the panel, and run the cable along existing wiring looms.
  4. Continue down the door seal — the rubber weather stripping usually pulls away easily and snaps back over the cable.
  5. Route under the glovebox and up to the 12V socket or fuse box.

Use the trim tool to push cable into gaps. Never force it — if a panel resists, find an alternative route. Cable ties can secure excess cable under the dashboard.

Step 4: Power It (Two Options)

Option A: 12V Cigarette Lighter (Easiest)

Simply plug the power cable into your car’s 12V socket. The dash cam turns on when you start the engine and off when you switch off. Downside: no parking mode — the camera has no power when the engine is off.

Option B: Hardwire to Fuse Box (For Parking Mode)

Hardwiring connects the dash cam directly to your car’s electrical system, giving it power even when the engine is off. This enables parking mode.

  1. Locate your fuse box — usually under the dashboard on the driver’s side, or in the glovebox.
  2. Identify two fuses: one that’s always live (constant 12V — for parking mode) and one that’s switched (only on with ignition — for normal recording). Use a multimeter or fuse tester.
  3. Common choices: the 12V socket fuse (switched), and the hazard lights or interior lights fuse (constant).
  4. Remove the chosen fuses, insert them into the fuse taps, and plug the fuse taps into the original slots.
  5. Connect the hardwire kit’s red wire to the constant fuse tap, yellow to the switched tap, and black to a metal ground point (any bolt touching the car’s chassis).
  6. Set the voltage cut-off on the hardwire kit — 12.0V is safe for most cars. This prevents your battery from draining completely.

Step 5: Insert the SD Card and Test

Insert your microSD card (64GB minimum, 128GB recommended). Most cameras format it automatically on first use. Start the engine, check the camera powers on, and take a short test drive. Review the footage on your phone or computer to confirm the angle and quality are right.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Mounting too low: Keep it behind the mirror, high on the windscreen.
  • Forgetting to remove the lens film: Many cameras ship with a protective film over the lens.
  • Not testing the angle: The camera should capture roughly 60% road and 40% sky. Too much sky and headlights will wash out the exposure.
  • Using a standard SD card: Buy a high-endurance card designed for continuous recording. Standard cards fail within months.
  • Routing cables in front of airbags: This is a safety hazard. Always route behind airbags — if you’re unsure, pay a professional.
