Walk into Halfords or browse Amazon for a dash cam these days and you will see “4K” plastered across half the boxes. It sounds impressive. But does it actually matter when the footage is sitting on your windscreen recording the M25 at rush hour?
The honest answer is yes, it does — though probably not for the reasons the marketing team would like you to believe. A good 4K dash cam can genuinely capture number plates and facial details that a 1080p unit would miss. It can also be a colossal waste of money if you buy the wrong one.
Here is what you actually need to know about 4K dash cams in 2026, written for UK drivers who want facts, not hype.
What does 4K actually mean on a dash cam?
Technically, 4K resolution means the sensor captures video at 3840 x 2160 pixels — four times the detail of standard 1080p. On paper, that is 8.3 megapixels per frame versus 2.1 megapixels.
In practice, however, not all 4K dash cams are created equal. The sensor and processor matter far more than the resolution badge on the box. A cheap 4K dash cam with a low-quality sensor and heavy compression can produce footage that looks worse than a well-tuned 2K unit from a reputable brand like Viofo or Nextbase.

You will want at least a 128 GB card, and 256 GB is smarter if you do a lot of motorway miles. The price gap is real. A genuinely good 4K dash cam starts around £150 and runs north of £300 for dual-channel (front and rear) setups. You can buy a perfectly capable 1080p unit for £50-80. The question is whether the extra detail is worth £100+ to you, and for most people who have ever tried to read a plate from dash cam footage, the answer is yes.
Heat matters more at 4K. Higher resolution recording generates more processor heat. In summer, parked in direct sunlight — and UK summers are getting warmer — a 4K dash cam is more likely to thermally shut down than a 1080p equivalent. The rear camera’s job is covering what happens behind you — a lower resolution is perfectly adequate for that, and the cost saving is substantial.

Weather and lighting. The UK has roughly 1,300 hours of sunshine annually versus Spain’s 2,800. We drive in grey, overcast conditions more often than not. 4K sensors with good low-light performance — specifically those using Sony Starvis 2 technology — handle British weather noticeably better than budget sensors.
